Maligaon: Heavy rainfall has caused significant soil erosion near a railway track on the Jamira-Bairabi section, prompting the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to begin restoration work and cancel or curtail several train services.
According to a press release issued by the Northeast Frontier Railway, the railway track between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram, along the Katakhal-Bairabi section, was affected following heavy rainfall on the evening of September 3.
Around 70 metres of railway track has been affected by the erosion, with the impact extending up to approximately 40 metres from the track centre. NFR has already started restoration work at the affected location and is monitoring the situation closely.
The railway authorities said the absence of direct road access to the site is creating additional difficulties for restoration teams. Due to the site conditions and accessibility challenges, the repair work is expected to take some time.
As a result, several train services have been cancelled.
Trains Cancelled
The following services have been cancelled:
- Train No. 15609, Guwahati–Sairang Express — journey commencing September 4, 2026
- Train No. 55667, Silchar–Bairabi Express — journey commencing September 4, 2026
- Train No. 13126, Sairang–Kolkata Express — journey commencing September 4, 2026
- Train No. 55668, Bairabi–Silchar Express — journeys commencing September 4 and 5, 2026
- Train No. 55669, Silchar–Sairang Express — journeys commencing September 4 and 5, 2026
- Train No. 55670, Sairang–Silchar Express — journey commencing September 5, 2026
Two Sairang Trains to Originate from Hailakandi
NFR has also announced changes to two Sairang-originating services.
Train No. 15610, Sairang–Guwahati Express, scheduled to leave on September 4, will originate from Hailakandi instead. The service will remain cancelled between Sairang and Hailakandi.
Similarly, Train No. 20507, Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Express, scheduled for September 4, will also originate from Hailakandi, with its service cancelled between Sairang and Hailakandi.
Railway officials said restoration activities are underway and the progress is being closely monitored. The disruption is expected to continue until the affected track is restored and declared safe for train operations.
