Guwahati: The death of a doctor inside a private hospital in Guwahati has prompted a police investigation, with authorities examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Dr Prayash Singhal, an ICU physician associated with Nemcare Hospital in Guwahati. He was found unresponsive inside an ICU room on the second floor of the hospital’s new building on Wednesday morning.
According to hospital authorities, Dr Singhal had been on night duty on Tuesday. He reportedly complained of abdominal discomfort during the night and received medical attention. Hospital staff later found him unresponsive inside the ICU, following which senior doctors were called and he was declared dead.
Police were informed after the doctor was found dead and subsequently reached the hospital to begin an investigation. An unnatural death case has reportedly been registered, and police personnel as well as CID officials have examined the circumstances surrounding the incident and questioned people associated with the hospital.
The body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination. The medical and forensic examinations are expected to help establish the exact cause of death. Police have also said that it would be premature to draw conclusions about whether the death was a suicide or resulted from any other circumstance.
Dr Singhal had reportedly been working at Nemcare Hospital for several years and was involved in emergency medicine and ICU services. Hospital authorities have assured investigators of their cooperation as the inquiry continues.
The circumstances leading to the doctor’s death remain under investigation, and further details are expected once the post-mortem findings and police inquiry provide greater clarity.
