Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Congress Represents ‘One Particular Religion’, Not the People of Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on the opposition Congress during a media interaction, alleging that the party no longer represents the people of Assam and instead speaks only for “one particular religion.”

Speaking on the current political situation in the state, the Chief Minister said the opposition in Assam mainly comes from a specific religious community and therefore the ruling government is not overly concerned about their criticism.

“Today’s Congress does not represent the people of Assam. It represents one particular religion,” Sarma said. He further claimed that, except for one MLA, all Congress legislators focus only on issues related to their religion rather than matters concerning Assam or its indigenous communities.

The Chief Minister also alleged that the Congress lacks both the intention and sincerity to speak for the state and its people. According to him, the people of Assam have given the ruling party a strong mandate by electing 102 MLAs, and the government remains committed to fulfilling the promises made to the public.

Sarma stated that the BJP-led government would continue carrying out its responsibilities with dedication, irrespective of opposition criticism.

During the interaction, the Chief Minister also spoke about the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and referred to restrictions on prohibited relationships under the law. He said marriages between close blood relatives, including cousins and siblings, would not receive legal recognition once such provisions come into effect after presidential assent.

He added that India is a civilized society and citizens must abide by laws framed within constitutional and social norms.

The remarks are expected to trigger strong political reactions from opposition parties, particularly the Indian National Congress, amid the continuing political confrontation in Assam.
