An FIR has reportedly been lodged against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over alleged religious remarks made during an Eid programme in Kolkata.
According to reports, advocate Rinky Chatterjee Singh filed the complaint at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station. The complaint alleges that comments made by Banerjee during the Red Road Eid gathering insulted Sanatan Dharma and hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community.
The FIR reportedly includes charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including allegations related to intentional insult, criminal intimidation, defamation and promoting religious disharmony.
During her speech at the Eid event, Banerjee had accused the BJP of engaging in divisive politics. Her supporters have defended the remarks, claiming they were directed against the BJP’s Hindutva-based political approach rather than any religion.
However, BJP leaders, including current West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, have strongly criticised the remarks and described them as reflective of an “anti-Hindu mindset.”
The controversy comes just weeks after the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, in which the BJP secured a major victory, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress in the state.
Opposition leaders and Trinamool supporters have also alleged that the FIR may be politically motivated and linked to post-election political tensions in West Bengal.
