South Salmara-Mankachar, September 6, 2026: Assam Police intensified its crackdown on suspected cattle smuggling with the seizure of 51 cattle and a boat during a patrol operation in South Salmara-Mankachar district.
The action was highlighted by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who said the operation demonstrated the continued efforts of the state police to prevent illegal transportation of cattle through both land and waterways.
According to the Chief Minister, one person was also apprehended during the operation. The seizure comes shortly after enforcement action in neighbouring Dhubri, indicating continued vigilance in Assam’s border and riverine areas.
South Salmara-Mankachar has extensive riverine stretches, making waterways an important part of the region’s transport network. The latest seizure highlights the challenges faced by law-enforcement agencies in monitoring movement through both conventional roads and river routes.
Sarma praised the police personnel involved in the operation and reiterated that Assam Police would continue its campaign against cattle smuggling irrespective of the route used for transportation.
The latest action adds to ongoing enforcement efforts in the state aimed at curbing the suspected illegal movement of cattle, particularly in areas adjoining Assam’s international border.
Authorities have maintained that both road and water routes will remain under surveillance as part of efforts to strengthen enforcement against cattle smuggling.
