Guwahati, July 30: As Assam continues its recovery from the recent floods, the State Bank of India (SBI) has extended financial assistance of Rs 1.60 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to support relief and rehabilitation efforts across the state.
A significant portion of the contribution—Rs 1 crore—was raised through the voluntary donation of one day’s salary by SBI employees, reflecting the bank’s collective effort to assist communities affected by the devastating floods.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the contribution and expressed gratitude to SBI and its employees for standing with the people of Assam during the ongoing recovery process. He appreciated the gesture, describing it as a meaningful show of solidarity with flood-affected families.
The financial assistance comes at a time when the state is continuing relief and rehabilitation work following one of the season’s most severe flood spells. Official figures indicate that the disaster has claimed 78 lives, while nearly three lakh people across multiple districts have been affected.
Although floodwaters have receded in many areas, the challenges remain considerable. Many families are still unable to return to normal life as they deal with damaged homes, loss of crops, disrupted road connectivity and destruction of public infrastructure.
The Assam government is continuing restoration work in the affected districts, with priority being given to rebuilding essential infrastructure, assisting displaced families and ensuring relief reaches those still in need.
