Tura: The Meghalaya government has taken a significant step towards resolving decades-old land ownership issues in Tura by distributing land pattas to eligible families residing on General Administration Department (GAD) land, providing them with legal ownership and improved access to government services.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma handed over the land ownership documents to beneficiaries in Chinap A’slang, calling the initiative an important milestone in addressing the long-standing issue of GAD land occupation in Tura Town.
The land pattas will enable beneficiary families to establish legal ownership of their properties, making it easier to access bank loans, obtain official certificates and avail benefits under various government welfare schemes and public services.
The ongoing land regularisation programme covers 754 households across eight localities in Tura Town. According to the Chief Minister, public participation has increased steadily since the initiative began. While only 42 households had deposited the required premium in December 2025, the number has now risen to 210.
Officials said 127 land pattas have been prepared for distribution under the programme, marking steady progress in the implementation of the initiative.
In Chinap A’slang, 25 out of 93 eligible households completed the required premium payment and received their land ownership documents during the programme.
The initiative is part of the Meghalaya government’s efforts to regularise long-occupied GAD land in Tura, providing residents with legal ownership while facilitating easier access to financial services, government documentation and welfare benefits.
As the programme progresses, authorities are expected to encourage more eligible households to complete the required formalities so that additional land pattas can be issued in the coming months.
