Rangia, Assam: A tragic incident has shocked residents of Korragorh in Rangia after a man lost his life after reportedly falling into a deep roadside pond that lacks both a guard wall and protective fencing.
The deceased has been identified as Tapan Kalita, a local resident and daily wage worker. According to family members and local residents, Kalita did not return home on time on the night of the incident, prompting relatives to search for him. His motorcycle was later found near the pond, and after an extensive search, his body was recovered from the water.
Residents alleged that the pond, which is located adjacent to a public road, is nearly 20 feet deep and poses a serious danger to commuters and pedestrians. They claimed that despite repeated warnings, no adequate safety measures such as fencing or a protective boundary wall had been installed around the water body.
A local village representative stated that concerns regarding the pond’s safety had been raised multiple times in the past. According to him, warnings were issued about the risks posed by the excavation and the absence of proper safeguards, but no effective action was taken.
The victim is survived by his wife and two young children. Family members expressed grief over the sudden loss and urged authorities to provide assistance to the bereaved family.
Kalita’s wife said he usually returned home by evening after work, but when he failed to arrive and did not answer phone calls, the family became worried and began searching for him. His body was eventually discovered in the pond.
Following the incident, local residents have demanded immediate intervention from the administration. They have called for the construction of a guard wall, installation of fencing around the pond, and implementation of other safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has sparked concerns over public safety and the dangers posed by deep, unprotected water bodies located alongside roads in rural areas.
