Nalbari, June 1: The main accused in the sensational Nalbari murder case, identified as Roz Ali, was killed in a police encounter after allegedly attempting to escape from custody, according to reports.
The development comes days after the murder of Madhurya Barman, an office-bearer of the West Nalbari Regional Students’ Union, and the attack on a young woman in Nalbari district, an incident that sparked widespread outrage across Assam.
According to reports, police opened fire when the accused allegedly tried to flee. Authorities are yet to release a detailed official statement regarding the circumstances of the encounter.
The case had triggered massive public protests, with several organisations demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible and strict action under the law. The incident occurred in the Gangapur area of Mukalmua in Nalbari district, where Madhurya Barman and his relative were allegedly attacked while travelling on a scooter. Barman succumbed to his injuries, while the injured woman continues to receive treatment at a hospital in Guwahati.
The victim, Madhurya Barman, served as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students’ Union. His death led to demonstrations across the state, with student bodies and various organisations demanding justice and stronger measures to maintain law and order.
Police had launched an intensive search operation to trace the accused following the incident. The reported encounter has now added a new dimension to the high-profile case, which continues to attract significant public attention.
