Buenos Aires: Lionel Messi has officially closed the Argentina chapter of his football career, announcing his retirement from international football at the age of 39. Messi revealed that his retirement message had actually been written shortly after the World Cup final but was not immediately published.
According to FIFA, he wrote the farewell letter on July 21, two days after Argentina’s defeat to Spain. He later decided to make it public following the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who died in Rosario on August 8 at the age of 68.

Messi’s decision applies to international football and does not mean the end of his professional playing career.
The 39-year-old remains a player for Inter Miami, where he is under contract through 2028. He can therefore continue his club career even though his days wearing Argentina’s famous No. 10 shirt have come to an end.
