GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has congratulated Indian athletes for their performances at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, praising their determination and achievements on the international sporting stage.

In a post on X, Sarma celebrated the Indian contingent’s medal-winning performances and highlighted the athletes’ gold medals, multiple podium finishes and notable results across different para-sports. He said their achievements had filled the country with pride.

One of the standout performances came from archer Sheetal Devi, who won two gold medals on October 22. She partnered with Toman Kumar to win the compound mixed-team title before successfully defending her women’s compound individual title. She also won silver in the women’s compound doubles event, completing a three-medal haul at the Games. The Asian Paralympic Committee confirmed her two gold medals and silver medal.

India also celebrated a gold medal for Suvarna Raj in the women’s F54 discus throw. In para-athletics, Dharmaraj Solairaj defended his men’s long-jump title with an Asian record of 7.15 metres, while Shailesh Kumar, Varun Singh Bhati and Rahul achieved a podium sweep in the men’s T63 high jump, taking gold, silver and bronze respectively.

The Indian contingent recorded further successes in track and field, para-archery, para-badminton and para-table tennis. Swati Chaudhary secured silver in the women’s W1 archery event, while Indian athletes continued to reach medal rounds in badminton and table tennis.

The achievements underline the breadth of India’s para-sporting talent and the dedication of athletes competing across a range of disciplines. Their performances at Aichi-Nagoya have brought further attention to para-sports and the importance of supporting athletes with opportunities to compete at the highest level.

Sarma’s message concluded with congratulations to the athletes and a call to celebrate their achievements under the national sporting campaign hashtag #Cheer4Bharat.

The 2026 Asian Para Games are being held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from October 18 to 24. India’s campaign includes athletes competing across multiple sports, with the contingent seeking to build on the country’s achievements at previous editions.
