GMCH Performs Northeast’s First Liver Transplant in a Government Hospital, Says Assam Health Minister

Guwahati, October 24, 2026: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has successfully performed a liver transplant surgery lasting approximately 16 hours, marking a significant milestone for public healthcare in Assam and the Northeast.

Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal announced the achievement in posts on X, congratulating the doctors, specialists and allied clinical teams involved in the complex procedure. According to reports published on October 24, the surgery was carried out on the night of October 23 under the leadership of Dr. Senthil Kumar. Singhal described the procedure as the first successful liver transplant in a government hospital in the Northeast.

In his message, Singhal credited the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and said the state government had initiated strategic steps in 2025 to develop advanced transplant infrastructure within Assam. He described the successful surgery as the realisation of those efforts and a major step towards expanding access to specialised medical treatment in the state.

The Health Minister also emphasised that the achievement represents the beginning of a broader effort to strengthen advanced healthcare services for the people of Assam. Developing specialised treatment facilities within the state could help more patients access complex medical procedures closer to home.

The successful transplant marks an important development for GMCH and Assam’s government-run healthcare system, demonstrating progress in the state’s capacity to provide highly specialised surgical treatment. The procedure also highlights the role of coordinated medical expertise and advanced infrastructure in expanding access to complex healthcare services across the Northeast.
