GUWAHATI, October 15: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has appealed to citizens, devotees and Durga Puja committees to maintain cleanliness and adopt environmentally responsible practices during the festive celebrations.
In a message shared on its official X account, the civic body urged people to use designated dustbins, avoid single-use plastics, dispose of Puja waste responsibly and refrain from littering public spaces.
The corporation emphasised that celebrations should combine religious devotion with civic responsibility, encouraging residents to help keep Guwahati clean and green throughout the festive period.
The appeal comes as part of broader efforts to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness during Durga Puja. GMC has also been encouraging Puja committees to maintain hygienic surroundings and adopt eco-friendly practices through its Swachh Durga Puja initiatives.
Proper waste disposal is particularly important during large public celebrations, when discarded decorations, food packaging and other waste can accumulate around Puja pandals and public spaces. Using designated bins and avoiding disposable plastics can help reduce litter and make post-festival cleaning easier.
The corporation’s appeal also aligns with the objectives of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign, which promotes public participation in cleanliness and sanitation activities.
GMC has urged citizens and Puja organisers to work together to ensure that the festivities remain clean, orderly and environmentally responsible.
The civic body reiterated its message to the public: celebrate with devotion and responsibility while contributing to a cleaner and greener Guwahati.
