Guwahati: The Department of Mathematics at Gauhati University organised a seminar featuring an invited lecture by Prof. Kalyan Chakraborty of SRM University-AP, focusing on the connection between everyday mathematical problems and advanced theories. His lecture, titled “Fruits to Algebraic Curves,” illustrated how a practical fruit-selling problem can be formulated as a Diophantine equation, opening the way to explore concepts in number theory and algebraic geometry.
Prof. Chakraborty is the Senior Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics at SRM University-AP. He has also served as Director of the Kerala School of Mathematics and as a professor at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute in Allahabad.
The seminar brought together faculty members from Gauhati University and Assam Engineering Institute, a postdoctoral research fellow from SRM University-AP, research scholars from the Chennai Mathematical Institute, and students and research scholars from Gauhati University. The programme encouraged academic exchange and demonstrated how familiar problems can lead to deeper mathematical investigations.
