Guwahati: Reinforcing its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development, Gauhati University organised a series of plantation activities as part of Van Mahotsav 2026, with a major afforestation drive conducted along the Assam–Meghalaya border under the theme “Let’s Make Hills Green.”
The week-long observance, held from July 1 to 7, was coordinated by the Gauhati University NSS Cell in collaboration with Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya. One of the key highlights of the programme was an afforestation campaign organised on July 5 at Dandoral, Sunapur, a border area between Assam and Meghalaya, where NSS volunteers actively participated in planting saplings to promote ecological restoration and environmental awareness.
The plantation drive was inaugurated by Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kakati, Secretary, University Classes, in the presence of Dr. Lakhimi Gogoi, NSS Programme Officer of Narangi Anchalik Mahavidyalaya, and Dr. Sashi Prava Devi, NSS Programme Officer of the Gauhati University Campus Unit. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from NSS volunteers, who joined hands in the effort to increase green cover and spread awareness about environmental protection.
As part of the Van Mahotsav celebrations, Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta also planted a sapling at the Vice Chancellor’s office, symbolising the university’s continued dedication to sustainable environmental practices and biodiversity conservation.
The plantation initiatives were carried out with the objective of encouraging community participation in conservation efforts while highlighting the importance of preserving forest ecosystems and mitigating the impacts of climate change through increased green cover.
Through the Van Mahotsav observance, Gauhati University reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship by promoting tree plantation, ecological responsibility and active involvement of students in sustainability initiatives. The university said such programmes aim to inspire greater public participation in protecting the environment and building a greener future for coming generations.
