Gauhati University Hosts Indo-Bhutan Symposium on Regional Challenges

GUWAHATI: Scholars and students from Northeast India and Bhutan gathered at Gauhati University for the opening day of the Indo-Bhutan Two-Day Symposium 2026, with academic discussions focusing on some of the region’s major contemporary challenges.

The first day of the symposium featured discussions on climate change, food security and holistic well-being, bringing together members of the academic community to share research, experiences and perspectives.

The programme opened with the Prof. H.K. Baruah Memorial Lecture, the Prof. N.K. Das Memorial Research Innovation Award and the formal inauguration of the Indo-Bhutan Symposium. Academics from Gauhati University and the Royal University of Bhutan subsequently participated in talks and academic sessions.

Parallel technical sessions were also organised as part of the programme, providing researchers and faculty members an opportunity to discuss their work and engage with participants from across the two countries.

The symposium is providing a platform for academic exchange between Northeast India and Bhutan, particularly on subjects that have a direct bearing on communities and sustainable development in the region. The discussions are also intended to encourage greater interaction among researchers, students and faculty members.

Prof. Kumananda Tayung, Professor and Head of the Department of Botany at Gauhati University, is the Convener of the symposium.

The event is expected to continue its academic engagements on the second day, further bringing together scholars and researchers to exchange ideas on issues of shared regional significance.
