NUMALIGARH, Aug 23: Fuel supplies from Assam to Meghalaya have been temporarily disrupted after the Numaligarh unit of the North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union decided to halt the movement of Meghalaya-registered fuel-carrying vehicles.
The decision comes amid tensions in Meghalaya and follows reports of alleged attacks involving Assamese drivers and tourists in the neighbouring state.
According to the union, tankers transporting essential petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and LPG, will not be allowed to proceed from Numaligarh to Meghalaya for the time being.
The suspension is expected to affect the supply of fuel to several parts of Meghalaya and has raised concerns about the possibility of shortages if the disruption continues for an extended period.
The Numaligarh unit of the North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union reportedly took the decision in view of the prevailing situation and concerns surrounding the safety of drivers and others travelling between the two neighbouring states.
