A fresh incident of chain snatching has sparked concern in Rangia after an 80-year-old woman was robbed of her gold chain by unidentified thieves in broad daylight.
According to reports, the victim, identified as Promila Deka, had gone to Murara Bazaar for shopping. While returning home in an e-rickshaw, a young man reportedly boarded the same vehicle near Gopal Mandir. As the elderly woman got down from the rickshaw a short distance later, the accused allegedly snatched the gold chain from her neck and fled from the spot.
Witnesses said the snatcher quickly crossed the road and escaped on a motorcycle where another person was waiting. The entire incident happened within seconds, leaving the elderly woman shocked.
Speaking about the incident, Promila Deka said she had hired the e-rickshaw after shopping at the market. She stated that the youth suddenly pulled the chain from her neck when the rickshaw stopped and then escaped on a bike with an accomplice.
The victim’s family members expressed serious concern over public safety in Rangia town, especially after such an incident involving an elderly woman during daytime. They said the situation could have turned dangerous if she had suffered injuries or fallen on the road during the snatching.
An FIR has been lodged at Rangia Police Station regarding the incident. Police have reportedly begun an investigation and assured the family that necessary action will be taken soon.
The incident has once again raised questions over the growing menace of chain snatching and street crimes in the region, with locals urging authorities to strengthen security and surveillance in busy public areas.
