Nazira, Assam | July 22: Highlighting the severe impact of the recent floods in Upper Assam, senior Congress leader and former Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia has appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to introduce a dedicated relief and rehabilitation package for the flood-hit Nazira Co-District.
In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister on Tuesday, Saikia said thousands of residents across the Nazira region are struggling after floodwaters damaged public infrastructure, disrupted transportation and affected agricultural activities. He urged the state government to take immediate steps to restore normalcy and accelerate rehabilitation efforts.
According to the Congress leader, the Nazira, Simaluguri and Amguri Development Blocks have been among the worst-affected areas, with around 160 villages and over 60,000 people impacted by the floods. He stated that roads, bridges, culverts, educational institutions and large stretches of agricultural land have suffered significant damage, affecting both daily life and local livelihoods.
Saikia pointed out that the damage to important roads, including the Geleky–Nazira route and several village link roads, has disrupted movement and made it difficult for relief supplies to reach many affected communities. He stressed the need for restoring road connectivity on priority to support relief and rehabilitation work.
Seeking long-term recovery measures, Saikia requested the state government to sanction a special financial package for rebuilding damaged infrastructure. He urged that reconstruction of roads and bridges be carried out through the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to improve connectivity in the affected areas.
The Congress leader also sought financial assistance for farmers whose crops and farmland were damaged by the floods. He called for support through the supply of seeds, fertilisers and agricultural machinery, along with measures to restore cultivable land so that farming activities can resume without delay.
Emphasising the need for swift government intervention, Saikia said timely restoration of infrastructure and adequate support for affected families would be crucial in helping the flood-hit region recover from the widespread damage.
