Shillong, June 11: A tense situation unfolded along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district on Wednesday after India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) disagreed over the nationality of a 55-year-old man.
According to reports, the man, identified as Sati Rajbanshi, was detained by the BSF on allegations of illegally entering India. The BSF reportedly treated him as a Bangladeshi national and attempted to send him across the border.
However, BGB personnel refused to accept him, claiming that he was an Indian citizen and therefore could not be handed over to Bangladesh. The disagreement led to a heated exchange between personnel of the two border forces at the border outpost in the Nandirchar area of South West Garo Hills district.
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media. The footage reportedly shows the elderly man moving between the two sides while appearing confused about his status. Bangladeshi border guards can also be seen questioning him about his identity and place of residence.
The situation attracted the attention of local residents on the Bangladeshi side of the border, with a crowd gathering near the area as the standoff continued.
To resolve the matter, local commanders of both border forces held a flag meeting. However, no agreement could be reached regarding the man’s citizenship.
As of the latest reports, Rajbanshi remains stranded in the no-man’s land between the two countries, with authorities yet to determine his nationality and future course of action.
