CHAPAKHOWA: A historic educational institution in Assam’s Tinsukia district is set for further development with an investment of ₹8 crore, highlighting the state government’s focus on strengthening educational infrastructure while preserving its academic heritage.

Sadiya Government Higher Secondary School, located in Chapakhowa, traces its origins to 1905, when it was established as a Government Middle English School at Purona Sadiya. Over the years, the institution had to relocate several times due to natural disasters and riverbank erosion before eventually establishing itself at its present location.

The school was upgraded to a Government High School in 1946 and subsequently attained Higher Secondary School status in 1975. Among its notable historical associations is Nilakanta Hazarika, father of legendary Assamese singer and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, who served as a teacher at the institution. Maulvi Abdul Latif Barua was also among its early headmasters.

Spread across 57 bighas of land, the school currently caters to 1,222 students from Classes VI to XII. Under the leadership of Principal Usharani Hazarika, its 49 teaching and non-teaching staff continue to support the educational needs of students in the region.

The ₹8 crore investment was highlighted by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu in a social media post under the Sewa Sankalp Abhiyan. The initiative reflects the importance of upgrading educational facilities while maintaining the legacy of institutions that have contributed to Assam’s academic development for generations.
