Actor Imran Khan Served Notice to Leave India by October 28 After Mumbai Protest

MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, has reportedly been served a notice directing him to leave India by October 28 following his participation in a demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to reports published on October 15, the notice was issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) after a complaint concerning Khan’s participation in the protest. Authorities have cited his status as a US citizen and alleged violations of immigration rules in connection with the action.

The incident dates back to October 10, when Khan joined a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan organised in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a political group that had called for Kumar’s resignation. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayn Marie Khan were also reportedly among those detained by police during the protest.

Following his detention, Khan shared a photograph of himself inside a police van on social media, accompanied by the caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.” Videos circulating online also showed him interacting with police personnel and questioning the reason for his detention.

The reported notice has brought renewed attention to the legal restrictions applicable to foreign nationals participating in political demonstrations in India. Khan is reported to be an American citizen and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.

However, the precise legal grounds cited in the notice and the scope of the alleged violations remain important considerations in the case. The Indian Express reported that the specific grounds for the order were unclear, while the notice gives Khan until October 28 to leave the country.

The development follows wider protests organised against the Chief Election Commissioner, with demonstrators raising concerns over electoral issues and demanding his resignation.
