Guwahati: Assam’s efforts to combat wildlife crime have recorded significant results, with nine suspected rhino poaching attempts prevented and 48 individuals arrested under Operation Falcon. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the achievements on Thursday, October 29, while reaffirming the state’s commitment to protecting its greater one-horned rhinoceros population.
The Chief Minister credited the anti-poaching initiative with strengthening wildlife protection and reported zero rhino poaching, although the timeframe for the latest claim was not specified. Operation Falcon, launched in 2024, involves coordinated efforts by the Assam Police and Forest Department to combat poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking.
Project Rhino to Strengthen Conservation Efforts
Sarma also drew attention to Project Rhino, highlighting the government’s continued focus on safeguarding the state’s iconic wildlife. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to maintain conservation gains and protect rhinoceroses from poaching threats.
Assam remains a major stronghold of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, with Kaziranga National Park hosting the world’s largest population of the species. The park, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has played a crucial role in rhino conservation.
The latest figures highlight the importance of sustained anti-poaching measures as Assam works to protect its wildlife and preserve its natural heritage for future generations.
