Shillong: Young footballers in Meghalaya are set to benefit from a major sports infrastructure initiative after the state government approved land for a proposed football academy to be developed by NorthEast United FC at Mawkhanu in New Shillong.
The Meghalaya Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, approved the leasing of 19.99 acres of land to the football club for 45 years during its meeting on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The proposed academy will involve an estimated investment of ₹40 crore to ₹50 crore and feature three football grounds, accommodation facilities and other supporting infrastructure. The project aims to identify and nurture promising young footballers while providing opportunities for advanced training and professional development.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasised that the initiative would help create a stronger pathway for talented players to progress from grassroots football to professional competition. The academy is expected to provide aspiring athletes with improved training facilities and greater opportunities to develop their sporting careers.
The project will complement Meghalaya’s existing Mission Football programme, which focuses on grassroots talent development and support for local football clubs. The state government has been working to strengthen football infrastructure and encourage greater participation among young players.
The proposed academy is expected to contribute to Meghalaya’s growing football ecosystem and strengthen NorthEast United FC’s involvement in developing sporting talent across the northeastern region.
The initiative marks another step towards establishing Meghalaya as a centre for football development, with a focus on preparing emerging players for competitive football at higher levels.
