Rs. 8 Crore Investment to Transform Historic Nevil Higher Secondary School in Sonitpur

Sonitpur: More than a century after its establishment, Nevil Higher Secondary School in Assam’s Sonitpur district is set to receive a major infrastructure upgrade with an investment of ₹8 crore. The development aims to modernise the institution while preserving its longstanding contribution to education in the Chariduar-Balipara region.

Assam Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu highlighted the transformation of the school, which falls under the Balipara Education Block and has served generations of students since its establishment in 1918.

The institution was founded through the initiative of British officer G. A. Neville, with assistance from local residents, including Bhuban Das and Biren Changkakati, along with members of the community. Former Assam Education Minister Amiya Kumar Das also played an important role in its subsequent development.

Originally known as Government Nevil M.E. School, the institution underwent several stages of development over the decades. It was provincialised in 1977 and subsequently upgraded to the higher secondary level in 1980, expanding educational opportunities for students in the surrounding areas.

Spread across approximately 75 bighas of land, Nevil Higher Secondary School currently accommodates 1,050 students from Classes I to XII. The institution operates under the leadership of Principal Rajesh Das, with 27 teachers and four other staff members handling academic and administrative responsibilities.

The proposed ₹8 crore investment is expected to give the historic school a renewed appearance and improved educational infrastructure, creating a more supportive learning environment for students.

The development represents another step towards strengthening government educational institutions in Assam, particularly schools with a longstanding role in serving rural and semi-urban communities.
