Washington, August 15, 2026: A fresh remark by US President Donald Trump has added another layer of tension to the ongoing confrontation with Iran, after he said the United States could soon declare the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as US territory.
Speaking at a political event at a police academy in Garden City, New York, Trump linked any such move to what he described as the eventual defeat of Iran. He made the comments while defending the US military and economic pressure being applied to Tehran.
The statement immediately drew attention because the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for energy shipments. The narrow waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, making uninterrupted access through it critical to global oil and gas markets.
Hormuz at the Centre of the US-Iran Conflict
The strait has become a major flashpoint since the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on February 28. Iran subsequently restricted shipping through the waterway, while Washington imposed a naval blockade aimed at putting further economic pressure on Tehran.
The resulting disruption has sharply reduced commercial traffic through the strait. Reuters reported that only a small number of vessels were able to pass through on Friday compared with normal traffic levels, with oil shipments particularly affected.

At the New York event, Trump portrayed Iran as being under severe pressure and said Washington effectively controls whether ships can pass through the strait under the current blockade.

Despite the attention generated by Trump’s statement, there is uncertainty over how literally it should be interpreted. The Wall Street Journal, as reported by the Straits Times, said an unnamed White House official later characterized Trump’s comment about making the waterway US territory as a joke.
There has been no formal announcement establishing the Strait of Hormuz as US territory. Any attempt to change the legal status of such a strategically important international waterway would have major geopolitical and legal implications.
Global Energy Markets Watching Closely
The Strait of Hormuz is particularly important because a substantial share of internationally traded energy normally passes through the waterway. Continued disruption has therefore raised concerns well beyond the Middle East, with potential consequences for fuel prices, shipping costs and the wider global economy.
For now, the strait remains one of the most sensitive pressure points in the US-Iran conflict. With Washington maintaining its blockade and Tehran continuing to challenge US demands, Trump’s latest comments are likely to add further uncertainty to an already volatile situation.
