Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu: The divorce proceedings involving Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, have come to an end after Sangeetha withdrew her petition before the family court in Chengalpattu.
Sangeetha appeared before the court through video conferencing during the latest hearing and informed the judge of her decision to withdraw the divorce plea. The court subsequently recorded the withdrawal, effectively bringing the proceedings to a close.
The petition was filed by Sangeetha in February this year, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. She had cited irreconcilable differences in her petition and had also sought permanent alimony. In addition, she requested permission to continue residing at the couple’s matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
The case had been adjourned on several occasions. During a hearing on June 15, Sangeetha had reportedly expressed her intention to withdraw the petition and appeared before the court virtually. The matter was thereafter listed for further hearing on August 7.
The proceedings had also been deferred during the previous month after neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court. Their lawyers had represented them on earlier occasions, informing the court that the couple faced difficulties in appearing personally.
With Sangeetha formally withdrawing the petition, the family court has now closed the matter.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s Nearly 27-Year Marriage
Vijay and Sangeetha married on August 25, 1999, in Chennai. Their marriage followed an interfaith relationship and was solemnised through a traditional Hindu ceremony.
The couple has two children. Their son was born in 2000, while their daughter was born in 2005.
Speculation surrounding the couple’s relationship gained public attention in 2023 after Sangeetha was reportedly absent from several important events involving Vijay. Similar discussions resurfaced in 2025 following her absence from some major TVK programmes, including the party’s second state conference.
The developments surrounding Vijay’s personal life have drawn additional public attention as he has expanded his presence in Tamil Nadu politics through the TVK.
For now, the withdrawal of the petition means that the divorce proceedings initiated earlier this year will not continue before the Chengalpattu family court.
