Mirabai Chanu Calls on Indian Lifters to Stay Confident Ahead of Commonwealth Games

Glasgow: Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu has urged India’s weightlifting contingent to remain confident in their preparation as they gear up for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying athletes should focus on their training instead of feeling burdened by medal expectations.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Chanu said expectations from Indian fans are natural, particularly for athletes making their Commonwealth Games debut. However, she stressed that competitors should avoid unnecessary pressure and trust the work they have put in during training.

The two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist also encouraged young lifters to approach the event with the same mindset they would carry into the World Championships or Asian Championships, rather than treating it as a competition requiring extra pressure. According to Chanu, staying composed and giving their best will be crucial to achieving success.

India’s weightlifting events at the Commonwealth Games will be held from July 26 to July 30 at the SEC Armadillo in Glasgow. Chanu is part of the women’s squad alongside Gyaneshwari Yadav, Bindyarani Devi, Harjinder Kaur, Sanjana and Martina Devi. The men’s team comprises Rishikanta Singh, M. Raja, Ajaya Babu, Dilbag Singh and Lovepreet Singh.

The 31-year-old is set to return to international competition after missing the Asian Weightlifting Championships in May due to a shoulder injury. Her comeback is expected to strengthen India’s medal hopes as the Games get underway.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will run until August 2, with India’s weightlifters aiming to continue the country’s strong performances on the Commonwealth stage.
