Guwahati | July 22: Guwahati’s solid waste management system received a major infrastructure boost on Tuesday with the commissioning of a new waste transfer and recycling facility at Panjabari, a project expected to improve waste handling, segregation and recycling across the city.
Developed by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the new facility comprises a 50-tonne-per-day Integrated Refuse Transfer Station (IRTS) and a 10-tonne-per-day Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Civic officials said the infrastructure will enhance the efficiency of municipal waste collection while promoting scientific processing of recyclable materials.
The project was inaugurated by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai in the presence of Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Deputy Mayor Smita Roy, MIC Member Ashim Saikia, GMC Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phookan, councillors and other officials.
According to the municipal corporation, the transfer station will enable faster movement of collected waste to processing sites, reducing delays in transportation. The adjoining material recovery facility has been established to improve segregation and increase the recovery of recyclable waste before final disposal.
GMC said the initiative forms part of its ongoing efforts to modernise Guwahati’s waste management infrastructure and promote environmentally sustainable urban development. The civic body believes the facility will contribute to cleaner public spaces, improved sanitation and better utilisation of recyclable materials.
The Panjabari project marks another step in the city’s long-term strategy to strengthen solid waste management through modern infrastructure while supporting the goal of a cleaner and greener Guwahati.
