Guwahati, Assam: Senior BJP leader Syed Mominul Awal has urged community leaders, religious figures, and social organisations to take greater responsibility in preventing criminal activities and preserving communal harmony in Assam.
Addressing a press conference at the Assam BJP headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, Awal expressed concern over recent incidents of serious crime and their impact on public perception. Referring to recent criminal cases, including the incident in Nalbari that has drawn public attention, he said such events create mistrust and negatively affect the image of law-abiding members of the community.
Awal stated that criminal acts should be condemned regardless of the identity, background, or community of those involved. He emphasized that society as a whole must work together to ensure that anti-social elements do not damage Assam’s long-standing tradition of communal coexistence.
Speaking at the press conference, Awal said that whenever serious crimes occur and individuals from a particular community are found involved, it creates embarrassment and concern among responsible citizens belonging to that community. He called upon indigenous Muslim communities, Miya Muslims, religious scholars, intellectuals, and social leaders to actively discourage criminal behaviour and promote positive values.
The BJP leader suggested that local community institutions and religious bodies could play a constructive role by holding discussions and awareness programmes aimed at preventing crime, substance abuse, and other anti-social activities. He noted that established community networks have the potential to identify social problems at an early stage and help address them effectively.
Awal also highlighted the importance of maintaining trust among different communities in Assam. He warned that increasing suspicion and social divisions could weaken the state’s social fabric and urged all sections of society to work collectively to strengthen harmony and mutual respect.
He further appealed to religious and community leaders not to remain silent when incidents occur but to actively participate in efforts to promote lawfulness, social responsibility, and peaceful coexistence.
The remarks were made during a media interaction at the BJP’s state headquarters in Guwahati, where Awal discussed issues related to crime prevention, social responsibility, and communal harmony in Assam.
No specific community was blamed for criminal activities during the press conference, and Awal stressed that responsibility for maintaining peace and social order rests with all sections of society.
