Kolkata, June 2: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has sparked fresh political discussion after claiming that several leading private hospitals in the state had previously approached her for assistance and appointments.
Speaking at a public event, Banerjee referred to renowned healthcare institutions including Apollo Hospital and Bellevue Hospital. She stated that only a few months ago, her government had renewed Apollo Hospital’s license for 30 years and alleged that representatives of some hospitals frequently sought her intervention regarding administrative and business-related matters.
According to Banerjee, hospitals that once approached her government for support are now raising questions about the relationship between healthcare institutions, the administration, and those in power. She also mentioned that business groups, including the Birla and Lodha families, had earlier faced disputes and often approached her seeking assistance.
Her remarks come amid ongoing political debates in West Bengal over governance, the role of private institutions, and the relationship between corporate entities and the government.
The comments have generated attention across political circles, with supporters viewing them as a reflection of her government’s influence during its tenure, while critics argue that the statements raise questions about the extent of political involvement in matters concerning private healthcare institutions.
Neither Apollo Hospitals nor Bellevue Hospital had publicly responded to Banerjee’s remarks at the time of publication.
Mamata Banerjee currently serves as the chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and is the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, following the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
