Nalbari, June 1: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has demanded immediate action against those responsible for the killing of a student leader in Nalbari district, with the organisation alleging that the incident reflects a serious failure of the state’s law-and-order machinery.
Addressing the media, AASU General Secretary Samiran Phukan said the incident was not merely an attack on an AASU worker but a matter concerning the safety and security of the general public.
According to AASU, Mriganka Barman, Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students’ Union, was allegedly attacked and killed in a brutal incident on Saturday night. A female relative of the victim, identified as Mridumudra Barman, was also reportedly injured in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Phukan alleged that concerns had previously been raised regarding harassment faced by the injured woman and called for a comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the case. He urged law enforcement agencies to arrest the accused at the earliest and ensure the strictest possible punishment under the law.
“This is not just an attack on an AASU worker. If a person can be attacked and killed on a public road, it raises serious questions about the ability of the administration to ensure the safety of ordinary citizens,” Phukan said.
The AASU leader further alleged that some members of the accused person’s family had left their residence following the incident. He demanded that all relevant aspects, including the circumstances surrounding their departure, be brought under the scope of the investigation.
The student body has also sought adequate compensation for the bereaved family, stating that the deceased was the only son of his parents. Additionally, AASU demanded proper medical treatment and support for the injured woman.
Meanwhile, the Nalbari District Students’ Union organized a protest march in Nalbari town, demanding a fair investigation and stringent action against those found guilty. Protesters called upon the government, home department, and police authorities to ensure justice and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
AASU warned that it would continue its democratic agitation until justice is delivered to the victim and all those responsible are brought to book. The organisation also urged the government to treat the matter with utmost seriousness and strengthen measures to maintain law and order across the state.
