Caracas, June 25: Venezuela has been struck by one of the most powerful seismic events in its recent history after two major earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale hit the South American nation within less than a minute of each other, leaving at least 32 people dead and more than 700 injured.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, struck near Morón, west of the capital Caracas, at a depth of about 22 kilometres. Just seconds later, a stronger 7.5-magnitude quake hit the same region at a depth of around 10 kilometres, intensifying the destruction across several parts of the country.
The powerful tremors caused widespread panic, damaging buildings, roads and critical infrastructure. Several structures collapsed in Caracas and nearby regions, trapping residents under debris and triggering large-scale rescue operations. Authorities reported that thousands of people have been affected, while emergency teams continue to search for survivors amid fears that the death toll could rise further.
In response to the disaster, Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a nationwide state of emergency and ordered the immediate deployment of military personnel, rescue workers and medical teams to the worst-hit areas. Schools and non-essential activities have been suspended as authorities focus on relief and rehabilitation efforts.
USGS experts warned that the twin earthquakes could result in extensive human and economic losses. Preliminary assessments indicate the possibility of significant additional casualties as rescue workers continue to clear rubble and reach remote affected communities.
Seismologists have described the event as one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Venezuela in more than a century. The relatively shallow depth of the second quake amplified the intensity of ground shaking, causing severe structural damage across a wide area.
Authorities have also warned residents to remain alert as multiple aftershocks have already been recorded and further tremors remain possible. Rescue and relief operations are continuing on a war footing as Venezuela grapples with the aftermath of the devastating disaster.
