Ahead of the re-poll scheduled for May 21 in Falta, Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan on Tuesday announced the withdrawal of his candidature, stating that the decision was taken in the interest of peace and development in the constituency.
Addressing a press conference, Khan said his primary objective was to ensure stability and progress in Falta. He stated that he envisioned a “Sonar Falta” and wanted maximum development for the people of the region.
“My objective is to ensure peace and security in Falta, and to foster its maximum possible development. Our Chief Minister is providing a special package for the people of Falta. It is for this reason that I am withdrawing my nomination,” Khan said during the media interaction.
When questioned about whether the decision was personal or influenced by the party, Khan maintained that his withdrawal was aimed solely at the welfare of Falta and maintaining peace in the constituency.
Following the announcement, the All India Trinamool Congress issued a statement on social media clarifying that Khan’s decision was his personal choice and not an official party decision.
In its statement, the party alleged that more than 100 TMC workers had been arrested in the Falta Assembly Constituency since the declaration of election results on May 4. The party further claimed that several party offices were vandalised, forcibly occupied, or shut down in broad daylight.
The TMC also accused the BJP of using intimidation tactics through administrative agencies and alleged that the Election Commission had ignored repeated complaints regarding the situation in Falta.
Despite the political tension, the party asserted that its workers remained determined in their fight against what it termed the “Bangla Birodhi BJP” both in West Bengal and at the national level in Delhi.
The re-poll in Falta is scheduled to take place on May 21 amid heightened political activity and security concerns in the constituency.
