Patna, Bihar: Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor has secured his first electoral victory after winning the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar, delivering a significant breakthrough for his Jan Suraaj Party (JSP). The result also marks the party’s first-ever seat in the Bihar Assembly and ends the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) long-standing dominance in the constituency.
According to the Election Commission of India, Kishor polled 64,151 votes, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar, who secured 44,827 votes. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rekha Kumari finished third with 14,273 votes, leaving Kishor with a victory margin of 19,324 votes.
The Bankipur constituency had remained a BJP stronghold for nearly three decades and was previously represented by senior BJP leader Nitin Nabin, who vacated the seat after being elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Prashant Kishor Promises Visible Changes
Soon after the results were announced, Kishor thanked the voters for their support and pledged to deliver visible improvements in the constituency within the next three months.
Speaking to reporters, he said the people of Bankipur would soon witness changes on the ground and assured that his office would remain accessible not only to local residents but to people from across Bihar. He also described the victory as a mandate for change and said it reflected the electorate’s desire for better governance.
Bihar Chief Minister Extends Congratulations
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated Kishor on his victory, saying the people of Bankipur had delivered their democratic verdict. In a post on X, he wished the newly elected MLA success in serving the constituency.
Why the Bankipur Bypoll Attracted National Attention
The Bankipur by-election gained national prominence due to several political developments. Besides being a traditional BJP bastion, the contest marked Prashant Kishor’s first attempt to enter the Bihar Assembly after launching the Jan Suraaj Party.
The election also took place amid nationwide discussions over student issues following protests in New Delhi, prompting political observers to closely watch the voting pattern in Bankipur, a constituency with a sizeable youth and student population.
Political analysts viewed the bypoll as a test of whether younger voters could influence electoral outcomes in urban Bihar. However, BJP leaders had expressed confidence that the party continued to enjoy strong support among young voters.
The BJP had initially planned to field Abhishek Kumar Sinha, but he withdrew before filing his nomination, citing personal reasons. The party subsequently nominated Neeraj Kumar, while the RJD fielded Rekha Kumari.
First Assembly Seat for Jan Suraaj
The victory is a major milestone for the Jan Suraaj Party, which failed to win a seat during its electoral debut in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. With Bankipur, the party has now opened its account in the state legislature, while Prashant Kishor has become an elected representative for the first time.
Jan Suraaj’s Bihar president Manoj Bharti described the result as a victory for people seeking political change. He said the party had received support across different sections of society, including what he called a large number of “silent voters,” and expressed confidence that the win would strengthen the party’s presence in Bihar.
