Over 100 Alleged Bangladeshi Nationals Gather at Hakimpur Border in West Bengal

A significant development was reported from West Bengal on Tuesday after more than 100 alleged Bangladeshi nationals gathered near the Hakimpur border area in North 24 Parganas district, close to the India-Bangladesh international border.

According to local reports, the group was seeking permission to return to Bangladesh voluntarily. The incident comes amid intensified political debate and renewed focus on illegal immigration and border security in West Bengal.

Hakimpur, located in the Basirhat subdivision near the Bangladesh border, has remained a sensitive border zone due to unfenced stretches and riverine routes.

Reports suggest that security agencies and local authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have reportedly increased surveillance in the area amid concerns over illegal cross-border movement.

The development follows recent statements by BJP leaders demanding stricter action against undocumented migrants under a “detect, delete and deport” approach. However, officials have stated that verification procedures will be carried out before any action is taken.

Authorities are also said to be coordinating with border agencies and maintaining temporary holding arrangements for suspected undocumented individuals in some districts. Officials have emphasized that legal citizens and eligible individuals under existing laws will be treated separately from illegal entrants.

Hakimpur and nearby border regions in North 24 Parganas have witnessed similar incidents in the past due to migration-related concerns and porous border stretches.

No official statement confirming the exact nationality or legal status of the gathered individuals had been released at the time of filing this report.
