Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that dedicating a flyover in the name of Syama Prasad Mookerjee is a matter of great pride for the people of the state.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister highlighted Dr. Mookerjee’s deep connection with Assam and described him as a true well-wisher of the Assamese people and culture.
Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that despite being a Bengali intellectual and leader, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee strongly supported the Assamese language and played an important role in strengthening it during a crucial phase of Assam’s history. He said Dr. Mookerjee believed Assamese and Bengali were two distinct languages and openly backed the use of Assamese as the medium of instruction in schools across the state.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that Dr. Mookerjee, along with his father, contributed significantly towards promoting and protecting the Assamese language and identity. According to Sarma, his support came at a politically sensitive time when Assam needed strong voices to defend its cultural and linguistic heritage.
Recalling historical events, the Assam Chief Minister said that during one of the most challenging periods in the state’s political history, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee stood firmly beside Gopinath Bordoloi and the people of Assam, providing both moral and political support.
“Today, we feel honoured and proud to dedicate this flyover in the name of such a great personality,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said during his address.
The naming of the flyover after Dr. Mookerjee is being seen as a tribute to his contribution towards Assam’s linguistic and cultural identity as well as his role in national politics.
