Shillong, August 18: A major road infrastructure project is set to reshape connectivity in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laying the foundation stone for the ₹140-crore upgradation of the Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Rangthong road.
The project is being funded under the state scheme and is expected to improve movement across the region while strengthening links between communities and key economic and social services.
Sangma described the road project as more than an infrastructure upgrade, highlighting its potential to function as a growth corridor for the district. Improved connectivity is expected to provide better access to markets, healthcare facilities and educational institutions, while creating opportunities for tourism, agriculture and trade.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the scale of development undertaken in South West Khasi Hills since 2018. According to him, projects worth more than ₹850 crore have already been implemented in the district, while the government’s overall commitment has reached nearly ₹990 crore.
The latest road project is part of the state government’s broader focus on improving infrastructure beyond Shillong and extending development initiatives to rural and remote areas of Meghalaya.
Sangma reiterated that development should reach communities across the state, including villages and districts located away from the state capital.
With improved road connectivity expected to support transportation and economic activity, the Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Rangthong corridor could play an important role in linking local communities with wider markets and essential services in the years ahead.
