Jerusalem/Beirut, June 1: Tensions in the Middle East have intensified further after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. The targeted area, known as Dahiyeh, is widely regarded as a stronghold of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.
According to official statements from the Israeli government, the strikes were ordered in response to what Israel described as repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement by Hezbollah, along with attacks on Israeli cities and civilians. Israeli authorities said the military would target locations believed to be linked to Hezbollah’s operations in the southern outskirts of Beirut.
The latest development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, raising concerns about a broader regional confrontation. Reports indicate that Israeli military operations have intensified in southern Lebanon in recent days, while Hezbollah has continued launching attacks against Israeli targets.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese government has appealed to the United States and the international community to intervene and pressure Israel to halt further military action, citing fears of civilian casualties and worsening humanitarian conditions.
Diplomatic efforts are also underway to prevent the situation from spiraling further. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly held separate discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. According to officials familiar with the talks, Washington is exploring ways to reduce tensions, including efforts to persuade Hezbollah to halt attacks in exchange for limiting Israeli military operations in Beirut.
The United States has expressed hope that renewed diplomatic engagement could help restore stability and create conditions for a lasting ceasefire. However, with both sides accusing each other of violations and hostilities continuing on the ground, the prospects for de-escalation remain uncertain.
