Celebrating two decades in India’s aviation sector, IndiGo has unveiled a special anniversary campaign that will reward thousands of domestic travellers with free flight tickets through fare refunds. The airline, which launched commercial operations on August 4, 2006, is commemorating the milestone by giving eligible customers an opportunity to receive refunds on their ticket bookings.
Anniversary Campaign Offers Fare Refunds
To mark its 20th anniversary, IndiGo has introduced the “IndiGoFree” campaign, under which 20,000 domestic tickets will be offered to selected passengers through a refund-based reward program.
The offer applies to domestic bookings made between August 4 and August 6, 2026, using IndiGo’s official booking platforms, including its website, mobile application, and AI-powered virtual assistant, 6Eskai.
Customers who book during the promotional period will automatically become eligible for a random selection process. Chosen participants will receive an invitation through email and WhatsApp to answer a simple question. Those who provide the correct answer—within three attempts—will receive a refund of up to ₹10,000 per PNR. The airline said eligible refunds will be processed within three to five business days.
The campaign covers both Economy Class and IndiGoStretch bookings for one-way as well as return domestic journeys. The airline has advised passengers to review the applicable terms and conditions before participating.
From One Route to India’s Largest Airline
IndiGo began its journey with a single flight connecting Delhi, Guwahati, and Imphal. Over the past 20 years, it has transformed into India’s largest airline, holding approximately 51 percent of the country’s aviation market by capacity.
Today, the carrier operates a fleet of more than 430 aircraft, serving over 95 destinations within India and more than 40 international destinations. With nearly 2,200 flights operating every day, the airline carried over 123 million passengers during FY26, reflecting its dominant position in the country’s aviation industry.
Leadership Reflects on the Milestone
Commenting on the anniversary, Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, said the airline was founded with the goal of making air travel affordable, dependable, and accessible to more Indians. He noted that the company will continue investing in technology, operational capabilities, and customer experience while expanding connectivity across domestic and international markets.
Milestones That Shaped IndiGo’s Growth
During its 20-year journey, IndiGo has introduced several initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and passenger convenience. These include its fast 25-minute aircraft turnaround model introduced in 2006, accessibility-focused boarding ramps, the adoption of Electronic Flight Bags in 2015 to reduce paper use, India’s first international commercial flight using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in 2022, a women-friendly seat selection feature during web check-in launched in 2024, and the induction of the Airbus A321XLR into its fleet in 2026.
Expansion Plans for the Future
Looking ahead, IndiGo has outlined ambitious growth plans for the remainder of the decade. By 2030, the airline aims to expand its fleet beyond 550 aircraft, increase daily departures to around 3,000 flights, and serve nearly 200 million passengers annually, reinforcing its position as one of the fastest-growing airlines in the region.
