GUWAHATI: Assam Police have dealt another blow to suspected drug trafficking networks with the seizure of 1.48 kg of heroin, estimated to be worth around ₹10.5 crore, during an operation in Kokrajhar district.
According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Kokrajhar Police intercepted a container vehicle at Damrapara and recovered the contraband, which had allegedly been concealed in 131 soap cases.
Two persons were taken into custody in connection with the seizure. Further details regarding their identities and the alleged source and destination of the narcotics were not immediately disclosed.
Announcing the operation, Sarma praised Kokrajhar Police and Assam Police for the successful interception, describing the seizure as another significant action in the state’s continuing campaign against narcotics.
The latest operation comes amid Assam’s sustained crackdown on drug trafficking across the state. Police and other enforcement agencies have carried out a series of operations targeting suspected trafficking networks and the transportation of illegal narcotics.
The Chief Minister has also expressed concern over attempts by drug trafficking networks to explore alternative routes into Assam. He recently warned about indications of a possible new corridor linking Myanmar with Assam through Arunachal Pradesh, particularly via Changlang district and towards Upper Assam.
Sarma has maintained that changing routes will not deter the state’s campaign against narcotics, adding that law enforcement agencies will continue to track and take action against those involved in the illegal drug trade.
Further investigation into the Kokrajhar seizure is expected to determine the wider network, if any, behind the alleged transportation of the heroin.
