
Agartala: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a weather alert for Tripura, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state over the next three days due to the influence of multiple weather systems. An Orange Warning has been issued for four districts, while the remaining areas remain under a Yellow Warning.
According to the IMD’s Agartala Meteorological Centre, West Tripura, Khowai, Dhalai and Gomati districts are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on July 8. Heavy rainfall is also likely in the other districts, prompting the issuance of a Yellow Warning.
The weather office has forecast heavy rain across all eight districts on July 9, with a Yellow Warning remaining in force. On July 10, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over West Tripura, Khowai, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura districts.
The IMD attributed the expected rainfall to a seasonal trough extending from southwest Rajasthan to northeast Bangladesh through a well-marked low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southwest Uttar Pradesh. The trough also passes through north Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. An upper-air cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, extending up to 3.1 kilometres above mean sea level, is further enhancing moisture inflow into the region, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall across Tripura.
Tripura has already experienced substantial rainfall over the past 24 hours. Rainfall data recorded between 8:30 am on July 7 and 8:30 am on July 8 showed Chawmanu in Dhalai district receiving the highest rainfall at 139.2 mm, followed by Lembucherra in West Tripura with 105.5 mm. Kumarghat in Unakoti district recorded 92 mm, while Kadamtala in North Tripura received 58 mm.
The IMD has advised residents, especially those living in low-lying areas and regions vulnerable to landslides, to remain alert. Authorities have warned that persistent rainfall could result in waterlogging, localized flooding, landslides and temporary disruption of transportation and other public services over the coming days.
