Guwahati: In a significant operation against the illegal diversion of subsidised food grains, the Guwahati Police uncovered an alleged Public Distribution System (PDS) rice smuggling racket by intercepting a truck carrying stolen rice in the city’s Lalmati area. The operation resulted in the seizure of 200 bags of PDS rice and the arrest of one person.
According to Guwahati Police, the action was carried out by a team from the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police Station. Acting on specific inputs, the police intercepted a truck bearing registration number AS01KC0792, which was allegedly transporting rice meant for beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the consignment was being transported from Barpeta district to Meghalaya after being allegedly diverted from the government welfare distribution network. Authorities suspect the rice was intended for illegal sale outside the state.
During the operation, police seized 200 bags of PDS rice from the truck. The driver, identified as Asuruddin Miya (30), a resident of Sarthebari in Barpeta district, was taken into custody in connection with the case.
Police have initiated legal proceedings against the accused and launched a detailed investigation to identify others involved in the alleged smuggling network. Investigators are also examining how the subsidised rice was diverted from the Public Distribution System and whether a larger interstate syndicate was involved in the illegal transportation.
Officials said further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and uncover the full extent of the racket. The latest operation reflects the Guwahati Police’s continued efforts to curb the illegal diversion of essential commodities and take action against organised smuggling activities affecting public welfare schemes.
