GMCH Chief Advises Precautions as Heat Intensifies Across Assam

GMCH Chief

Guwahati, June 1: With temperatures rising sharply across Assam, the GMCH Chief has urged residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses and dehydration.

Speaking on the changing weather conditions, the GMCH Chief said the state experienced relatively pleasant weather until the end of May, but the intensity of the heat has increased significantly with the onset of June. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, particularly during the hottest hours of the day.

Emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated, the GMCH Chief noted that the human body requires a regular supply of fluids during hot weather. People travelling outdoors should carry clean drinking water and consume adequate fluids to replenish water and essential salts lost through sweating.

The health expert also recommended covering the head and face while stepping out in the sun to reduce direct exposure to heat and minimize the risk of heat-related health problems.

Referring to heatstroke, the GMCH Chief said Assam is not currently experiencing the extreme temperatures seen in some northern and western states, where temperatures often exceed 45 degrees Celsius. However, the public should remain vigilant and follow basic safety measures during periods of intense heat.

On summer food and beverages, residents have been encouraged to drink normal water, lemon water and other natural fluids rather than relying on soft drinks. According to the GMCH Chief, excessive consumption of carbonated beverages may increase thirst and is not an ideal way to maintain hydration.

The GMCH Chief also cautioned against consuming ice made from unverified commercial sources, citing concerns about water quality. While ice cream produced by registered manufacturers is generally considered safe due to food safety regulations, people should exercise caution when purchasing ice products from unknown vendors.

Despite the rise in temperatures, no significant increase in heat-related cases has been reported at the hospital so far. Nevertheless, residents have been urged to remain alert as the summer season progresses and to seek medical attention if symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke develop.

Health experts recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, wearing protective clothing, and taking regular breaks while working outdoors.
