Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a fresh appeal urging residents to protect public property and refrain from pasting posters on government walls and other public infrastructure, warning that violators will face a fine of ₹5,000.
In a public awareness message shared through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the civic body emphasised that government walls and public spaces are community assets and that their upkeep is a shared responsibility of both the administration and citizens.
Accompanying the message, the GMC released a public awareness banner carrying the slogan “দায়িত্বশীলতাৰো এক চেহৰা থাকে।” (A city thrives through responsible citizenship). The banner specifically cautions against putting up posters on government walls, electric poles and other public places, stating that such acts deface public property and attract a penalty of ₹5,000 under the applicable civic regulations.
The corporation urged residents to help keep public spaces clean, aesthetically pleasing and free from unauthorised posters and advertisements. It stressed that preserving the city’s appearance and protecting public infrastructure require active cooperation from every citizen.
Highlighting the importance of civic responsibility, GMC said responsible behaviour by citizens plays a vital role in building a disciplined, organised and sustainable urban environment. The municipal body called on the public to respect shared spaces and contribute towards maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of Guwahati.
The awareness campaign forms part of the corporation’s broader efforts to discourage the defacement of public property and promote greater civic consciousness among residents. By discouraging unauthorised poster pasting, the GMC aims to preserve government infrastructure while improving the overall visual appeal of the city.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with the civic body by avoiding activities that damage or deface public property and by supporting initiatives aimed at making Guwahati cleaner, more organised and citizen-friendly. The corporation reiterated that maintaining public spaces is a collective responsibility and that responsible civic conduct is essential for a well-managed city.
