Guwahati: The spirit of sports took centre stage at Gauhati University as the institution observed National Sports Day with a programme aimed at encouraging greater participation in sporting and extracurricular activities among students.
The event was organised through the initiative of the Gauhati University Postgraduate Students’ Association, various university clubs and the National Service Scheme (NSS) group. Renowned sportsperson Teja Bhai was also present at the programme, according to the university.
The programme was formally inaugurated by Gauhati University Registrar Prof. Utpal Sarma. Addressing the gathering, Sarma highlighted the growing importance of sports within the broader educational framework, noting that sporting activities have gained greater significance under the National Education Policy (NEP).
The university has increasingly promoted sports and other extracurricular activities as an important part of student development. Gauhati University itself describes sports as contributing to teamwork, discipline, fitness and creativity alongside academic learning.
The programme was attended by Dr. Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Secretary of University Classes, Dr. Kuldeep Patgiri, Deputy DSW, faculty members, students and sports enthusiasts.
The celebration comes as Gauhati University continues to emphasise holistic student development through sports, cultural activities and other programmes beyond the classroom. The university’s recent academic and student activities have similarly highlighted the role of sports and extracurricular engagement in developing confidence, discipline and leadership among students.
National Sports Day is observed in India every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand and to promote awareness about the importance of sports and physical fitness.
