Nazira: As relief agencies continue to assist thousands of families affected by the recent floods in Nazira, a new controversy has emerged after local MLA Mayur Borgohain alleged that he received a death threat while overseeing relief operations in the constituency.
Speaking to reporters at a relief camp in Balighat on Friday, Borgohain claimed that an unknown caller contacted him on his mobile phone and allegedly threatened to kill him and members of his family. He also alleged that the caller used abusive language during the conversation.
According to the MLA, the incident occurred when he was engaged in coordinating rescue and relief work in areas devastated by the overflowing Dikhow River. He said the matter was immediately reported to the police, following which an investigation was launched.
Initial police inquiries reportedly traced the mobile number used in the call to a person identified as Anand Dadhara of Samaguri in Nagaon district. Authorities have initiated legal proceedings, and further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat.
While addressing the media, Borgohain shifted the focus to the humanitarian crisis unfolding across the constituency. He appealed to the Assam Government to continue extending support to flood-hit residents and urged political parties, social organisations and volunteers to work collectively for relief and rehabilitation, irrespective of political or ideological differences.
The MLA said several villages remain inaccessible because of floodwaters, making it difficult for rescue teams and relief workers to reach every affected family. Although food supplies, drinking water and essential medicines are being distributed, he acknowledged that assistance has not yet reached all those in need.
He also expressed gratitude for the support received from public representatives across Assam. According to Borgohain, elected representatives from various constituencies have contributed relief materials to assist flood-affected families in Nazira.
During the press briefing, BJP leader Narayan Deka said relief consignments comprising food items, clothing and drinking water had been dispatched from the Barkhetri constituency to support ongoing relief efforts in the flood-ravaged areas.
Police are continuing to investigate the alleged threat, even as flood relief and rehabilitation operations remain underway across several parts of the Nazira constituency.
