“Extortion Culture Will Not Be Tolerated”: Ranjit Kumar Das Warns of Strict Action

Ranjit Kumar Das has issued a strong warning against the growing “extortion culture” in Barpeta Road, stating that those involved in forcibly collecting money in the name of donations or “chanda” could face legal action and imprisonment.

Addressing the public during his visit to Barpeta Road after assuming charge as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Das said the government would take strict action against corrupt officials, employees, or police personnel if complaints are received from the public.

He specifically warned that no police officer would be allowed to illegally collect money from truck drivers or transport operators. He further stated that any officer found involved in corruption or extortion would face severe punishment from the government.

Ranjit Kumar Das also alleged that outsiders often enter Barpeta Road and pressure local businessmen for money in the name of donations. He urged traders and residents not to give in to threats or coercion and assured that strict legal measures would be taken against those involved.

Speaking strongly against corruption, Das declared that government employees with a “corrupt mindset” would not be tolerated in Sorbhog and warned officials engaged in bribery to reform immediately or face consequences.

During the event, the newly appointed Speaker received a warm welcome from several organizations, institutions, and local groups in his hometown region.

In his address, Das said voluntary contributions made out of goodwill were different, but demanding money through intimidation or threats would not be accepted under any circumstances. He warned that such individuals would have to face the law in the coming days.
