Sivasagar, Assam: The Dikhow River continues to remain in the “severe flood” category despite a marginal decline in its water level, with authorities urging residents to stay away from the river as flood risks persist across parts of Sivasagar district.
According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the river’s water level was recorded at 94.26 metres at 9:00 am, remaining 1.86 metres above the danger level of 92.40 metres. Although the water level has receded slightly, officials said the river continues to pose a threat to low-lying areas in Sivasagar and adjoining regions.
In view of the prevailing conditions, the district administration has appealed to residents not to venture near the river. Authorities warned that strong currents and elevated water levels continue to create hazardous conditions, particularly for people living along the riverbanks and in flood-prone localities.
Following guidelines issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Assistant Commissioner of Police S.K. Dhara issued a public safety advisory urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary movement near the river until the situation improves.
The warning comes as Assam continues to battle widespread flooding. According to official figures, the floods have claimed 47 lives and affected more than 7.2 lakh people across the state. Disaster management agencies remain on high alert as persistent rainfall and swollen rivers continue to threaten several districts.
Authorities have advised residents to follow official advisories, avoid entering flooded areas, and cooperate with emergency agencies as they monitor the evolving situation.
