Debabrata Saikia Seeks Fee Waiver for Flood-Affected Students in Three Assam Districts

GUWAHATI: Senior Assam Congress leader and former MLA Debabrata Saikia has appealed to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to intervene on behalf of students whose education has been affected by the recent floods in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts.

In a letter to the Governor, Saikia urged the Assam government to allow eligible flood-affected students free admission and waive all major educational charges, including semester, examination, laboratory, library and other compulsory fees. He said many families have suffered severe losses in the floods, with students losing books, certificates, study materials and other essential belongings.

While acknowledging the relief measures already announced by the government, Saikia said students pursuing higher education continue to face financial hardship. He requested that universities, colleges and schools implement the proposed fee waiver uniformly for students from the affected villages, describing the issue as an urgent matter concerning both education and humanitarian relief.
